After serving three terms as mayor, Ames Mayor Ann Campbell announced in April she would not seek re-election this fall. She said the decision not to run was difficult, and serving as mayor has been both challenging and gratifying.

Campbell will present Experiences of Being Ames Mayor and a Woman in Politics on Thursday, Sept 7. The 7 p.m. public event will be held at the Ames Public Library Auditorium and is co-sponsored by the AAUW Ames, the Ames Public Library, the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics at Iowa State University, and the League of Women Voters of Ames and Story County.

As mayor, Campbell represents Ames when working with outside organizations, including Story County, the Metropolitan Iowa Mayors, the Iowa League of Cities, and the National League of Cities.

“From those involvements, I have come to have great appreciation for the role of municipal government and the importance of nonpartisan leadership in that role,” Campbell said. “I trust that the next mayor of Ames will embrace those same inclusive values.”

Mayor Campbell was inaugurated on Jan. 3, 2006, and re-elected in 2009 and 2013. She has lived in Ames since 1967. Her community service includes 16 years as a member of the Ames City Council and past board member of the League of Women Voters. She has volunteered with Youth and Shelter Services, Heartland Senior Services and served as past president of the Iowa Peace Institute.
