Celebrating a Generation of Hope: Our MLK Essay Winner
We are thrilled to celebrate the remarkable achievement of Ada McKilligan (pronounced Odd-a), the first-place winner of this year's MLK Day Essay Contest. As a proud sponsor of this event, the Rotary Club of Ames is honored to highlight such incredible young talent within our community.

A Powerful Voice
At the MLK Day celebration on January 19th, Ada moved an audience of approximately 400 people with her essay, "A Generation of Hope." Over the course of her seven-minute presentation, she spoke with profound bravery about her personal experiences with prejudice and bullying related to her Turkish heritage. Her ability to channel personal challenges into a message of resilience and hope left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance.

Breaking Records
Ada's win is particularly historic:

  • A Rising Star: She is a freshman at Gilbert High School.
  • Youngest Champion: Ada is the youngest first-place winner the contest has seen in the last five years.
  • Tough Competition: She shared the podium with second-place winner Glory Nlebedim, a talented junior from Ames High School.

Looking Ahead
We are excited to announce that Ada will be joining a future Rotary Club meeting to present her winning essay to our members. We are looking forward to hearing her powerful message firsthand.
