The National Civics BeeĀ® is a nonpartisan civics competition that invites 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to share ideas for improving their communities. Hosted locally by the Ames Regional Economic Alliance in partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the competition encourages students to engage in civics while showcasing their knowledge and creativity.
Students participate by submitting a short essay by February 3, proposing a solution to a challenge in their community. Past topics have included homelessness, mental health, affordable housing, and transportation. A panel of judges will select 20 student finalists to advance to a live quiz-style competition that tests civics knowledge. The top three winners will receive cash prizes and advance to the State Civics Bee.
We believe it is critical to engage younger generations and encourage active participation in our democracy. Please share this opportunity with the Middle School Students in your life.
