Today we hosted Jonathan Buffalo, Historic Preservation Director for the Meskwaki Cultural Center and Museum. Jonathan provided an interesting summary of how the Meskwaki Tribe moved from the Pennsylvania area and expanded west, finally settling in Iowa and the Midwest.
The name Meskwaki means Red Earth People. The Meskwaki are part of the Sac and Fox Tribes of the Mississippi in Iowa, and the only federally recognized Indian tribe in Iowa.
