Author: My Name is Dixie: Designer of the Iowa Flag
Mar 13, 2023 12:00 PM
Hello, my name is Dixie. Who are you? Any life can be amazing, and you're about to read the story of someone very special: Dixie Cornell Gebhardt, designer of the Iowa flag! In May 1917, Dixie's design was chosen for Iowa's flag. She was fifty years old. It was an important moment for Dixie and for her state because the flag was used to identify Iowa's troops during World War I and at the U.S.-Mexico border. But the flag isn't where Dixie's story began. She had a family, and she was once a kid-just like you! My Name Is Dixie is a biography and journal for young readers. You'll learn about Dixie, the flag, and Iowa history. And you'll be encouraged to think about your history and what you want to do when you're older. What is a legacy? What will yours be? Author T. E. Waldmann-Williams and illustrator Cindy Gordon invite you to enjoy, learn, and become the person you're meant to be! |

![]() Jeff Kluever; Iowa and the Civil War

https://youtube.com/live/11hOiIPgf-Q?feature=share I’ve studied the Civil War nearly my entire life, not only to increase my own knowledge, but to find ways to take that knowledge and make it relevant, meaningful, and emotionally captivating for other audiences. I studied history at Grinnell College and earned a master’s degree from Carroll University, where I examined the impact of teaching history through narrative for my thesis. As the former Education Supervisor at Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier, I delivered hundreds of presentations, tours, and programs focused on slavery, the Civil War, and Reconstruction and poured myself into finding ways to make history real and consequential to my audience. |
