Climate Change

Gene Takle is professor emeritus of agricultural meteorology in the Department of Agronomy at Iowa State University. Professor Takle was a founding member of the multi-institutional team that has produced regional scenarios of future climates under the North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program. He has been a co-author of the 3rd (2014) and 4th (2018) US National Climate Assessments and the 2007 report of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. He is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and has been an AMS Certified Consulting Meteorologist since 1984. His current research focuses on impacts of climate change on the Midwest, especially agriculture, and studies of the efficiency of utility-scale wind farms and their interaction with agriculture. Dr. Takle hold a BA degree in physics and mathematics from Luther College and a PhD in physics from Iowa State University.

Dr. Wendy Wintersteen became the 16th president of Iowa State University in 2017, following a nationwide search and unanimous vote of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa. She is the first woman president in Iowa State history. And she’s only the second ISU graduate to hold the university’s highest office. Dr. Wintersteen has served Iowa State for 40 years in several capacities, including as one of the first female ISU Extension associates in integrated pest management. She served 11 years as dean of the internationally recognized College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and director of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station, and she held the university’s first endowed deanship. She earned a bachelor’s of science degree in crop production from Kansas State University and a Ph.D. in entomology from Iowa State. As president, and with the support of her administrative team, Dr. Wintersteen is advancing Iowa State University with priorities focused on enhancing student success; recruiting and retaining excellent faculty and staff; strengthening innovation and research excellence; developing a culture of entrepreneurship; making Iowa State a leader in creating a welcoming and inclusive campus environment; and growing state and private support for the university, its faculty, staff, and students.

A Legacy Gift Moving into the Future: The Brunnier Art Museum

Adrienne Gennett is the Associate Curator of Collections and Education with University Museums at Iowa State University. Adrienne graduated from The George Washington University with a B.A. in Anthropology and Art History. She attained her M.A. in the History of the Decorative Arts from Parsons The New School for Design in New York City, a unique graduate program focused on the study of decorative arts. She has held positions at The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY. With University Museums, Adrienne curates 4 to 8 exhibitions a year, primarily at the Brunnier Art Museum. She also works to develop faculty connections that incorporate the decorative and fine arts collections into the diverse areas of curriculum on campus, especially through class tours of exhibitions and lectures using museum objects. |

CRISPR: Gene Editing Technology

She received her B.S. in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2001 and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 2006. As a Damon Runyon Postdoctoral Fellow with Jennifer Doudna at University of California, Berkeley, she studied the mechanism of DNA targeting by CRISPR-Cas systems. Following a brief postdoc with Jamie Williamson The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, Dr. Sashital joined the faculty at Iowa State in January, 2014. The Sashital lab studies the mechanisms of CRISPR-Cas adaptive immunity using a combination of genetic, biochemical, biophysical and structural tools. |

Scott Siepker is an actor, writer, producer, and filmmaker. Scott started off as a stage actor at Iowa State University, where he received his bachelor degree in psychology.
Scott has gone on to co-found the film company, Iowa Filmmakers, which has been responsible for the Iowa Nice series of hit videos that included a two season run on ESPNU’s College Football Daily.
Though Scott is best known for his work as the Iowa Nice Guy, he is a versatile, veteran actor of stage and screen, drama and comedy.

Sarah Hanson is a member of Waukee Rotary, originally from West Des Moines, Iowa. She received her Bachelor’s from the University of Northern Iowa in Nonprofit Management, her Master’s in Public Administration from Drake University, and is working towards her Doctorate of Educational Leadership at Drake. She is currently the Director of U.S. Development for Blessman International, a nonprofit based out of Des Moines, Iowa, serving children in Limpopo, South Africa. She has a passion for connecting global communities and helping others serve others in a variety of capacities.

The Robotic Revolution ~ Thoracic Surgery

Dr. Mark Taylor has been a board certified general surgeon at McFarland Clinic since 1991. He earned his BA in Zoology from the University of Arkansas in 1982, and his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas in 1986. He did his residency in general surgery at the University of Illinois, Cook County Hospital. Dr. Taylor was part of a medical missionary team that travelled to Hospital de la Familia in Nuevo Progreso, Guatemala to deliver health care for 10 years, from 1998 – 2008. He is a past recipient of the Innovation and Excellence in Medical Practice Award from Mary Greeley Medical Center. His medical interests include Robotic Lung Surgery and Sentinel Lymph Node Surgery. His presentation today will be on “The Robotic Revolution in Thoracic Surgery.”

The Election Process

Lucy Martin was re-elected to her second full term as Auditor and Commissioner of Elections in 2016. She began serving as Auditor in January of 2011 following her unanimous appointment to fill the vacant office; she won her first election in 2012. Prior to holding office, Lucy was a Deputy Auditor. Lucy is a graduate of Rice University (BA) and received her Masters of Public Administration from Columbia University in 1996. Before moving to Iowa, she held supervisory positions in the New York City Mayor's Office of Management and Budget, overseeing units managing the operational and capital budgets for economic development, housing, buildings, ports, and planning. In her fifteen years with Story County, she has worked on a variety of committees, including the Real Estate and MAPS committees. She served on both the Land Use & Rural Affairs and Transportation legislative steering committees through the Iowa State Association of Counties (ISAC) as well as ISAC's County Strategic Technology Advisory Resource (CoSTAR) committee. She is a member of the Iowa State Association of County Auditors (ISACA) and is past president and vice-president of District I. She currently serves as co-chair of the Statewide Election Administration Training (SEAT) Board. Lucy is a past member of the executive board of the Iowa Precinct Atlas Association of County Auditors (IPACA); Precinct Atlas is an electronic pollbook, used by the majority of Iowa counties to facilitate voting. She is active in the local chapter of the League of Women Voters. Lucy is SEAT certified, as are most staff members. SEAT provides guidance on federal and state election laws, administrative rules, and best procedures for all types of elections. Lucy has presented numerous SEAT training classes. She is also a certified Precinct Election Official. Lucy has been married to her husband, ISU professor David Hollander, for 20 years. Their daughter attends Smith College. |

During her 10+ years she has worked with 10 campaign chairs, 100’s of campaign volunteers and has successfully reached and exceeded the goal each year. Kristin understands the importance of how the dollars raised makes an impact in the lives of thousands for individuals and families and works tirelessly to share that message. Dr. Karen M. Kedrowski is Director of the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics and Professor of Political Science at Iowa State University. She is a graduate of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and the University of Oklahoma, Norman. Dr. Kedrowski’s research agenda focuses primarily on women and politics and civic engagement. Prior to coming to Iowa State, she spent 24 years at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where she served in many roles, including Chair of the Political Science Department, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and as a key leader of the University’s civic and voter engagement efforts.
