Rotary Connects the World with Mary Beth Growney Selene, The Rotary Foundation Trustee, 2016-2019 and Rotary International Director, 2013-2015. Mary Beth is the founder and President of Ryan Signs, Inc., in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. She is a non-lawyer Fee Arbitrator and a (past) non-lawyer member of the Client Security Fund of the State Bar of Wisconsin. Mary Beth is a supporter of the What If? Foundation, which works to feed and educate children in Haiti. Mary Beth Growney Selene has been a member of the Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton, WI, USA since 1987 and she served her club as President in 1993-1994. She has been a host parent to four Rotary Youth Exchange students. In her District 6250 she served as Governor in 2000-2001; District Membership Chair and District Rotary Foundation Chair. Mary Beth served as a Training Leader at the International Assembly in San Diego and was the District 6250 Representative to the Council on Legislation in 2004, 2007 and 2010. She has served at the Zone level as an Institute General Chair, a Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator, Public Image Resource Coordinator, and Rotary Coordinator. Mary Beth served as a Rotary Foundation Trustee in 2016-2019 and, as a Rotary International Director in 2013-2015. While a Trustee, she served on the Finance, Program and Stewardship Committees of The Rotary Foundation, RI-USAID Partnership Steering Committee and the PolioPlus Advocacy Committee. She continues to serve on the Rotary-USAID Partnership Steering Committee. She is also a member of the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Action Group (WASRAG) Operations Team. She has received Rotary International’s Service Above Self Award and The Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service. Mary Beth and Alan are Major Donors and Bequest Society members to The Rotary Foundation’s Endowment Fund and they are both Sustaining members to the Annual Fund. |

Giving a Hand Up, Not a Hand Out

Habitat for Humanity of Central Iowa is a fiscally sound, non-profit organization made up of Individuals and groups from area faith communities, businesses and service groups that donate their time, talent and treasure to help build for people in need. As of December, 2017 HFHCI has completed and sold 58 homes and will continue to increase production by building and remodeling houses in Hamilton, Hardin and Story county this year. Andrea Weber is a graduate from the University of Iowa and is currently working on her Masters from MBTS. She has been married for 14 years and has two boys, Axel and Deakon. She resides in Boone and is actively involved as PTO president and women’s ministry leader for her church. In Boone she has spent the past 10 years working on community outreach and engagement through such events as a back to school supply drive, community wide trunk-or-treat, and food pantry for the local schools. She comes to Habitat for Humanity of Central Iowa with experience in marketing and social media advertising. With lots of ambition she is eager to bring her ideas to Story County. |

Iowa Able Foundation

Anna was adopted from Seoul, Korea and grew up in Iowa. She went to high school in Des Moines and earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Iowa. Following her days at the University of Iowa, she worked for Opera Carolina, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, and Kids Voting. She also worked in the Advancement department and earned her master’s degree in public administration at Wright State University. She lived in England for over three years before returning to her home state in 2018. Her most recent position is with the Iowa Able Foundation serving as their executive director. Anna Magnusson has served on a number of community and regional boards, including the Association of Fundraising Professionals, A Special Wish Foundation, Children’s Defense Fund, League of Women Voters Dayton, and Youth in Philanthropy Council. Anna was nominated and selected to participate in the 2003 Association of Performing Arts Presenters Emerging Leadership Institute in New York City. She was also nominated and selected as one of the 2006 Dayton Business Journal 40 Under 40 award recipients and most recently was accepted into the Leadership Ames Class XXXIII. Iowa Able Foundation Information Iowa Able Foundation empowers Iowans with disabilities, their families, and the aging to achieve and maintain independence. Iowa Able is a nonprofit organization committed to providing affordable financial services linked with education to alleviate the devastating effects of poverty. The Financial Solutions Program addresses immediate needs with financial resources needed to achieve independence; this includes a traditional loan, a credit builder loan, or a forgivable loan. The Financial Empowerment Program focuses on helping members gain the financial skills, knowledge and habits needed to maintain independence. |

A Survivor Tells Her Story

The speaker's name is Heather Brown, and she is a survivor of human trafficking. Since her heroic recovery as a victim of sex trafficking, Heather has provided speaking engagements to create awareness of the cunning recruitment practices of traffickers. She has shared control tactics of traffickers and helped with survivor-informed programming and training. She is now working full-time and has secured and maintained her own housing for the past year and a half. She is a licensed foster parent and will soon become an adoptive parent.

Brad Dell (he/him/his) is Director of Theatre at ISU, where he teaches classes in directing, performing arts, and script analysis. Since 2005, Brad has directed nearly thirty plays, musicals, and operas at ISU. He is the recipient of the 2019 Kennedy Center Gold Medallion, the 2017 Outstanding Teaching Award from the ISU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the 2017 Faculty and Staff Inspiration Award from the ISU Alumni Association, the 2017 Catch Des Moines Champion Award from the Des Moines Convention and Visitor's Bureau, and the 2012 “Local Treasure” award from the Ames, IA Community Arts Council. He is the Interim Co-National Vice Chair of KCACTF and the immediate past Chair of KCACTF Region 5. Brad is also the former Artistic Director of Apple Hill Playhouse in Delmont, PA, Repertory Theater of Iowa, and Iowa Stage Theater Company. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania and a Master of Fine Arts in Directing from Western Illinois University. Some of his recent directing highlights have included Godspell, Macbeth, Orpheus in the Underworld, Oklahoma!, The Children's Hour, Romeo and Juliet, Company, Little Women, Cabaret, The Secret Garden, Les Miserables, Next to Normal, Fiddler on the Roof, and Rent,. Brad holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania and a Master of Fine Arts in Directing from Western Illinois University. About ISU Theatre As a part of the Iowa State University Department of Music and Theatre, ISU Theatre seeks to empower citizen artistry by engaging students and the community in transformative theatre and performing arts experiences which examine the human condition, encourage lifelong learning, teach artistic skills, prepare professionals, inspire empathy, explore creativity, build relationships and embrace diversity. ISU Theatre administers a major and minor in performing arts and produces multiple theatre and performing arts productions throughout the year featuring performers, designers and technicians from throughout the university. The ISU Theatre CoLab Initiative seeks to foster collaboration and engagement between ISU Theatre and other groups both within ISU’s campus and throughout the broader community to create citizen artistry, inspire and be inspired by meaningful public discourse and expand opportunities for ISU students, faculty and staff.

Save Our Soil, Save Our Planet

Richard Cruse is a professor in the Agronomy Department at Iowa State University and Director of the Iowa Water Center where he has research, teaching, administration and Extension responsibilities. Cruse served as President for the National Institutes for Water Resources from 2015 – 2016. His program involves field and modeling research in soil erosion, soil management, and soil physical properties while he maintains cooperative research projects with the Northeast Institute of Geography and Agroecology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. These cooperative projects address the soil erosion and soil management effects on soil physical properties. He also teaches Advanced Soil Management in the Iowa State University Agronomy Graduate program; meets with diverse audiences to address soil management, soil erosion, and water quality issues; and administers the Iowa Water Center, one of the nation’s Water Resources Water Resource Units |

Kirk Norris is a graduate of Simpson College, Drake University Law School and a member of the Iowa Bar Association. He has been President and CEO of the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA), a voluntary membership organization that represents all 118 of Iowa's public and private hospitals since 2002. With his leadership, Kirk and IHA colleagues have significantly expanded hospitals' influence and leadership in public policy, information technology and professional education. |

We will reassess cancellations of any April meetings later in the month. Our goal is to keep everyone healthy and alleviate additional pressures on our local health care systems.
