United Way of Story County
Sep. 17, 2018
Kristin Pates, campaign director at United Way of Story County, is committed to inspiring people to join the fight for health, education, and financial stability of Story County. In her work with United Way, she is able connect caring people with meaningful ways to fund essential services for the betterment of the community. She enjoys communicating the vision of United Way in large or small settings to share her enthusiasm for giving, advocating and volunteering. Since joining the United Way team in February 2009, Kristin has trained hundreds of volunteers on how to convey the mission and vision of the organization and explain the strength of the United Way network. Kristin’s leadership, and that of dedicated volunteers, have helped grow United Way of Story County’s annual campaign by over 40% in eight years. During her term United Way of Story County rebranded to align with national standards, began a young donor affinity group, and expanded its Tocqueville Society by 600%. The successes in the annual drive mean increased fund allocation to help with several priority projects, including grade level reading, summer enrichment and education, homelessness prevention, and access to essential health services. Prior to United Way Kristin was the executive director of a non-profit arboretum. Her educational background is in communication arts with an emphasis in public relations. Kristin’s volunteering includes serving eight years on the advisory board of Story County Community Foundation to strengthen endowment building in Iowa, as well as multiple terms on both Young Professionals of Ames and Friends of Roosevelt Park boards. |

But when summer rolled around it seemed people preferred a cool treat. So, we put fresh ice cream between two wholesome homemade cookies. We began selling them at the Downtown Des Moines Farmers Market but soon people craved more. Now we offer our sweet sandwiches through a great group of retailers from Omaha to the Quad Cities |

Return of Iowa's Bald Eagles
Feb. 18, 2019
A lifelong interest in nature and wildlife led to the purchase of Ty Smedes’ first 35mm camera, in 1980. As a hunter, he loved being in the field, and the camera allowed him to be there, during all times of the year. In 1983, the Iowa DNR became interested in publishing his waterfowl photos, and from there his interest evolved to include more of Iowa's wildlife, prairies, insects, and scenic vistas. Then, as he travelled frequently to other parts of the Midwest and West, he began to include coverage from those areas as well. Eventually, his curiosity and love of nature led him to Brazil, seven different African Countries, the Falkland Islands, South Georgia Island, and the Antarctic Peninsula. Ty’s ultimate goal is to help others enjoy, appreciate, and value our often fragile and threatened natural eco-systems and natural heritage. He hopes his photos will cause others to make important choices which will save declining habitats and improve our natural world. Some of his photo credits include: The Smithsonian, The Nature Conservancy, Sierra, AAA Living, Outdoor Photographer, Our Iowa, The Iowan, and many more. Ty will present on interesting discoveries about Iowa's Bald Eagles and how they go about their every-day lives in Iowa and the Midwest. |
